Students in the French language program, and those who continue their studies of French as majors and minors, are encouraged to take advantage of one of UNCW's study abroad programs. Students can travel throughout the French-speaking world, including to programs in France (Paris, Cannes and Marseille, for example), Quebec and Senegal.

The curriculum in French and Francophone Studies reflects the fact that French is spoken by more than 300 million people in more than 29 countries across 5 continents.

Oral Communication Requirement:

To satisfy the oral communication requirement for the B.A. degree in French a student must successfully complete FRH 301.

Applied Learning Requirement:

To satisfy the applied-learning requirement for foreign language, a student must complete 6 credit hours of study abroad (at the intermediate level or above) or 3 credit hours of internship, directed individual study, practicum, honors, or service learning.

Requirements for a Major in French for the B.A. Degree:

Including FRH 201-FRH 202 or the equivalent and thirty hours at the 300-400 level of which at least 6 hours must be at the 400 level. FRH 294, FRH 394, and FRH 494 may be repeated under different subtitles. Only 3 of the hours at the 400 level may be obtained by means of a FRH 491 or FRH 498.

French Program Student Learning Outcomes

Students will:

SLO 1: Demonstrate an oral proficiency in French: listen and comprehend French.

SLO 2: Demonstrate Oral proficiency in French: listen and speak effectively.

SLO 3: Read and comprehend various genres of French writing: personal and business correspondence. newspaper article, film review, and literary text.

SLO 4: Write well in French: correspondence, summaries, narratives, descriptions, and analytical essays.

SLO 5: Demonstrate cultural competency related to French and/or Francophone cultures.
