Major in Mathematics

In today’s knowledge-based economy, a strong background in mathematics opens doors to many careers. A math major shows future employers that a candidate has good analytical thinking and problem-solving skills. Our recent graduates have found jobs in actuarial sciences, computer science, economics and statistics, among other fields. Graduates from our double majors programs have also found jobs in areas other than mathematics such as biology, music, drama, with the math major bringing added value to the student’s degree.

Honors in Mathematics

This program is designed for students who are interested in pursuing graduate studies. This program has additional courses and prepares students for an M. Sc. or a Ph. D. Bishop’s size allows us to tailor the program to students’ particular interests. Recent graduates have pursued graduate studies at some of Canada’s best universities, including McGill, Carleton, Guelph, Sherbrook and Queen’s.

Work Opportunities

There are several work opportunities for math students. This is an excellent way of developing interpersonal and pedagogical skills while reinforcing your mathematical knowledge, and of course, earning some money! The following jobs are available:

  • Tutor in the Math Stats help center.
  • Peer tutor for math courses at the counselling office.
  • Marker for math courses.
  • Research assistant

General: Completed secondary school credential that would permit you access to university in that country; If you are studying at or have graduated from secondary school in a country where secondary school finishes after only 11 years of formal schooling. English Language Requirements: TOEFL minimum overall score of 237 (computer-based) or 90 (Internet – based); IELTS minimum overall score of 6.5; MELAB minimum score of 85; CAEL minimum overall score of 70; Cambridge English: Proficiency (CPE) minimum score of C; Cambridge English: Advanced (CAE) minimum score of C; Pearson Test of English: Academic (PTE: Academic) minimum overall score of 61.
