This MSc degree is a twin-focus programme of study which will prepare you for an exciting, international career as a professional translator and interpreter in the following languages combined with English: Chinese; French; German; Spanish. This specialist programme has been tailored to meet the needs of industry and will allow you to develop the ideal balance of theoretical knowledge and practical skills. At Heriot-Watt University we have the largest number of Interpreting and Translating labs of any Higher Education Institute in Europe. This ensures that all our students can gain maximum hands on experience during class time. Your learning will focus on developing a professional standard of expertise in specific areas of interpreting and translation such as: Technical and scientific translation; Subtitling and audio-visual translation; Use of Computer Aided Translation tools; Sight translation; Simultaneous interpreting; Consecutive interpreting and note taking; Sight interpreting. You will develop these skills to the highest standard and learn about the different approaches and skillsets required from interpreters when working in distinct professional contexts such as healthcare, court and legal, educational and conference interpreting. Our hands-on, professional standard experience of interpreting and translating is the ideal preparation for industry and ensures that our graduates are widely sought after and respected across the industry. Many recent graduates of this programme have gone on to build successful careers in areas such as: In-house Translator; Freelance conference Interpreter; Founder of Translation and Interpreting Agency; Courtroom Interpreter ; National Health Service Interpreting Head. Students will also achieve PGDip and PGCert awards in this course.

For most of our Masters level programmes we require a good first degree in a relevant subject. Science and Engineering (1st degree classification): 985 University (70%), 211 University (72%), Other Institutions(75%). Other than 1st- 985 University (65%), 211 University (68%), Other Institutions(70%). Business: 985 University (65%), 211 University (68%), Other Institutions(70%). Art and Design: 985 University (65%), 211 University (68%), Other Institutions(70%). Exceptions to the above: For Masters Programmes in Actuarial Mathematics and Statistics students are required to have 80% or above. For Masters Programmes in Brewing and Distilling students are required to have 80% or above. For Masters Programmes in Photonics, students are required to have 75% or above. Students require IELTS 6.5 overall with 6.0 in each element or an acceptable equivalent.
