Do you have an interest in the Latin America region and its diaspora? The interdisciplinary major in Latin American Studies will offer you great flexibility in choosing courses about Latin America in the humanities and social sciences. This major can prepare you to pursue a professional career in fields such as business, education, journalism and media, international relations, law, non-governmental work, planning and public policy, public health and social work, or for graduate study in Latin American studies or in one of the related disciplines.

In recent years, Latin American Studies students have participated in service-learning programs learning about topics ranging from anthropology and human rights, to education, health, and sustainability, in places such as: Córdoba, Argentina; Cochabamba, Bolivia; Oaxaca, Mexico; Cuzco, Peru; the Costa Rican rainforest, and the Guatemalan highlands.

You can also take advantage of traditional academic semester and year-long programs in Latin American and the Caribbean, including Argentina, Barbados, Brazil, Bolivia, Cayman Islands, Chile, Costa Rica, Cuba, Dominican Republic, Cuba, Mexico, and Spain.

The Center for Latin American Studies (CLAS) offers an interdisciplinary undergraduate program that includes both major and minor degrees. CLAS's mission is to promote research and knowledge-building that crosses both traditional disciplinary and geographic boundaries. As countries in the Hemisphere form regional markets, new regionalization’s have begun to occur that have untold economic, political and cultural impacts. The need for a rigorous academic analysis of the present and future implications of this regionalization is evident.

Latin American studies, in order to be salient and relevant to our needs as a multicultural society, is Hemispheric in scope. CLAS provides students with a strong grounding in Latin American history, culture, economics and language, while highlighting the ways in which globalization is impacting both the region and intellectual approaches to area studies, in general. Latin American Studies is a versatile major and helps develop skills useful anywhere. Your major is only one of many variables to be considered when developing your career plans. Many careers do not require a specific major, but rather a wide range of demonstrated skills and accomplishments. Regardless of your career choices, increase your marketability to employers through internships, responsible work experience, good grades and involvement in college activities.
