As a Criminology major you will examine the factors that cause crime rates to rise and fall, develop your skills and knowledge about the justice system, and explore new and innovative approaches to dealing with crime and the communities affected by it. At Saint Michael’s we take a truly integrated and multi-disciplinary approach to Criminology that combines skill development, foundational knowledge, and creative application into one integrated whole.

Our graduates pursue careers in law enforcement, victims’ advocacy, correctional drug counseling, community justice coordination, law school, and more. At Saint Michael’s we encourage all of our students to ask critical questions about justice, inequality, and public safety, and the relationship of these principles to our nation’s unfortunate history of racialized incarceration. Guided by the Edmundite principles of social justice and human dignity and using Vermont’s experience as a national leader in Restorative Justice, our program exposes students to key issues faced by professionals and administrators in law enforcement and the justice system, and provides them with hands-on opportunities to address public safety through internships at places such as Vermont State Police or the state-wide network of Community Justice Centers.

The course plan builds upon the College’s strength in the social sciences in order to equip students with strong research skills, while also introducing new courses that will expose students to some of the key issues faced by practitioners and administrators in law enforcement and the justice system. Additionally, the curriculum that will introduce students to innovative programs aimed at addressing public safety through mobilizing community efforts in creative efforts such as Vermont’s highly regarded Restorative and Community Justice network.
