Archaeology is a dynamic worldwide discipline that draws on both the sciences and the humanities to interpret the physical evidence left by humans and their ancestors around the planet. Practitioners use information from geography, history, mathematics, biology, anthropology, chemistry and sociology to process evidence at sites to form the best interpretation about past human behaviour. Understanding past human behaviour informs our view of modern society and its challenges.

The Archaeology Major draws on both the sciences and the humanities to interpret the physical evidence left by humans and their ancestors around the planet. You will learn to use information from geography, history, mathematics, biology, anthropology, chemistry and sociology to process evidence at sites to form the best interpretation about past human behaviour.

Understanding past human behaviour informs our view of modern society and its challenges. The Major provides you with comprehensive training in archaeological methods and theory, filed survey and excavation, as well as Aboriginal and maritime archaeology, with a strong Western Australian and Australian focus.

Career opportunities

Graduates find employment in a range of areas such as heritage advisors for mining companies and government departments, while positions for Archaeologists exist in the Western Australia Museum and Maritime Museum.

The State Department of Premier and Cabinet and the Federal National Native Title Tribunal recruits those with skills in archaeology for roles determining Native Title claims.

Specific careers include:

Archaeologist
Heritage Consultant
Museum Curator
Native Title Project Officer with Aboriginal corporations, non-government organisations (NGOs), resources companies or government departments.

English Language Requirements: IELTS (Academic) - 6.5 overall, with no individual band score lower than 6.0; CAE/CPE - 176 overall, with no individual band score lower than 169; PTE Academic - 58 overall, with no individual band score lower than 50; TOEFL (iBT) - 84 overall, with no score lower than 21 in writing and no other band score lower than 17.
