If you have the vision, determination, and passion to enter a profession such as medicine, dentistry or law, start here. In Canada, many professional programs require university coursework before you may apply to the professional program. The University of Winnipeg's smaller class sizes, research opportunities, and strong reputation for academic excellence will give you the advantages you need when applying to your professional program of choice. If you change your mind or cannot gain acceptance to your professional program, all of your UWinnipeg courses can be applied towards a bachelor's degree. International students should note that entry to professional programs in Canada is extremely competitive, and not all professional programs are open to international students. We encourage students to do their research and to have a strong backup plan.

Medical doctors are responsible for the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of disease. The University of Winnipeg is an excellent place to fulfil the admission requirements for Medicine at the University of Manitoba or other universities across Canada. Students study a minimum of 3 years at The University of Winnipeg, completing coursework in biochemistry, statistics, biology and more.

You will graduate from The University of Winnipeg with a Bachelor of Science or Bachelor of Arts degree. The degree you earn will depend on your course selection and interests; while there are required and recommended courses, there is no one degree or program that is required for entry to medicine. This provides an excellent backup plan should you not proceed to medical school.

After you complete your pre-professional studies at The University of Winnipeg, you will apply for admission to the faculty of medicine at another university. Enrolment in medical programs is limited, and only highly qualified applicants are chosen. Admission to medicine is based on an outstanding post-secondary academic record, performance on the Medical College Admissions Test, and non-academic qualifications. A minimum of three more years of study is required (four at the University of Manitoba). Once you have completed an MD degree, you will do a residency that will take two or more years, depending on your specialty.
