Why is this course for me?

From the moment a woman becomes pregnant, it’s the start of a journey leading to one of life’s greatest miracles: the birth of a baby. The term “midwife” means “with woman”. Midwifery is a wonderful profession and if you’re interested in working with women, their newborn babies and their families during pregnancy and childbirth, then midwifery is the career choice for you. The focus and philosophy of midwifery in UCD is the promotion of women-centred care.

Professional Clinical Experience

You’ll attend clinical placements in the internationally renowned National Maternity Hospital (NMH) or a linked maternity unit in the Ireland East Hospital Network (IEHG) in order to gain first-hand experience. You may also choose a midwifery placement during second year in National Maternity Hospital- Holles St., Wexford General, Midland Regional Hospital Mullingar, St Luke’s General Hospital, Kilkenny. You can also avail of a placement with the community midwives from either the NMH or Wexford General Hospital.

Career & Graduate Study Opportunities

Successful completion of your degree entitles you to register as a Registered Midwife (RM)* with The Nursing and Midwifery Board of Ireland (NMBI). On registration, numerous career opportunities are available to you in both hospital and community settings in Ireland and abroad, including Europe, Australia and New Zealand. You can also pursue further specialist qualifications through graduate diplomas, and master’s and PhD degrees.

Students must have Award of Regional Ministry of Education/Municipal Education Commission (or equivalent) approved Senior Secondary School Graduation Certificate and GaoKao result. In some circumstances the Huikao may be acceptable. Students must have Cambridge A Level: At least three subjects at A Level Grade C and three other subjects at GCSE Level Grade C. UCD requires Baccalauréat de l'Enseignement Secondaire + 1 year at a recognised university (Dipl?me de … (plus professional field); Dipl?me d'Etudes Supérieures; Dipl?me d'Ingénieur/d'Architecte d'Etat or Licence). English language requirements: IELTS - An average score of 6.5 over all components and a minimum of 6.0 in each band on the Academic Version; A minimum score of 600 in the paper-based Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL PBT), with Test of Written English at 475 +, a minimum score of 90 is required in the Internet based TOEFL (IBT); Pearson English Language Text: Minimum of 63 and at least 59 for each item in the Communicative Skills section.
