Teaching is a rewarding career choice for those who enjoy being part of children's development. The degree will give students the opportunity to develop the skills, knowledge and attitudes needed to become a successful secondary teacher. Students are encouraged to be independent learners who are able to adapt efficiently and constructively to meet the changes which occur in the teaching profession.

Option 1 - If you can pass all 48 credit points you will be deemed to have met the NSW Government's requirements and may proceed in the course. However, if you cannot pass all 48 credit points, you may not proceed and will be transferred to a non-teacher education course such as the Bachelor of Science.

Option 2 - Complete an undergraduate non-teacher education degree such as the Bachelor of Science (Mathematics major) or Bachelor of Educational Studies (with appropriate studies in Mathematics) and, if you have achieved a GPA of 3.50 or more, you can then apply for the Master of Teaching (Secondary) as a postgraduate student.

Course Aims

The Bachelor of Education (Secondary Mathematics) aims to provide candidates with:

an accredited professional qualification meeting the requirements of the Australian Institute for Teaching and School Leadership (AITSL) for initial teacher education programs, and ensuring all graduates meet the Australian Professional Standards for Teachers at the Graduate Career Stage;

Learning Outcomes

Upon completion of this course, students will be able to:

• satisfy the seven elements prescribed by the Australian Institute for Teaching and School Leadership:
• know their students and how students learn;
• know their subject/content and how to teach that content to their students;
• plan for and implement effective teaching and learning;
• create and maintain supportive and safe learning environments;
• assess, provide feedback and report on student learning;
• continually improve by engaging in professional learning; and
• continually engage professionally with colleagues, parents/careers and the community.
