UON oral health therapy students graduate with dual qualifications in dental hygiene and dental therapy. Our degree is also the only one in NSW that qualifies you to treat both children and adults, broadening your career options and boosting your employability.

As an oral health professional, you can use your unique skills to make a real difference and shape a healthier future for children and adults. Work closely with dental practitioners to perform a range of preventative and minor restorative tasks, educate your community on best practices and discover emerging methods for controlling and treating disease.

What you will study

This degree will build your scientific knowledge and clinical skills, using a population-based approach to oral health care.

Learn how to provide preventative and simple restorative treatments to individuals.

Discover how oral health and general health are intertwined, developing skills to improve overall individual and community wellbeing.

Develop critical research skills that will set you in good stead for life-long learning as an oral health professional.

Gain hands-on experience in our on-campus oral health clinic and simulation laboratory and undertake clinical placements in rural and urban regions across NSW.

Career opportunities

There are a number of ways to gain entry to undergraduate programs at the University of Newcastle. You may be considered for admission on the basis of: a completed NSW Higher School Certificate (HSC) or equivalent – irrespective of age of qualification; completed or partly completed higher education studies; TAFE/VET qualifications, with a minimum of a completed Certificate III (AQF level 3), excluding the Bachelor of Nursing; TAFE/VET qualifications, with a minimum of a completed Certificate II (AQF level 2) in conjunction with meeting additional performance based selection criteria for the Bachelor of Music and associated combined degrees; completion of a recognised enabling program within a 10 year period preceding admission to the University; overseas qualifications equivalent to Australian studies. English language requirement: TOEFL paper-based test score of 500; TOEFL internet based score of 60; IELTS (Academic) score of 6.0; PTE GSE score of 50; Cambridge English: Advanced score of 52.
