Anthropology is the study of people and culture in all periods of history and in all areas of the world. Through sub-disciplines like Archaeology, Biological/Physical Anthropology, Anthropological Linguistics, and Sociocultural Anthropology, one can investigate past and present cultures through the examination of artifacts, study human evolution and genetics, examine the nature of communication, and analyze societies and cultures. Some examples of topics studied include: the environmental impact of globalization, refugees in the Middle East and Africa, diseases and public health policy in the Ecuadorian Andes, and forensics.

Anthropology at Western Students studying Anthropology at Western have access to the Native Language Centre, laboratory facilities, collections and personnel at the London Museum of Archaeology, and an extensive collection of fossil casts and comparative skeletal samples, including an Egyptian mummy donated by the Royal Ontario Museum. In 2008, the Anthropology Department plans to open field schools in Madagascar and Peru.

Sociocultural Anthropology seeks to understand how human experience is shaped by the social, cultural, political, economic, and religious realities with which all people live. We approach this ambitious goal by analyzing, comparing and reflecting on research conducted with and about people around the world, including many locations in the Americas (from Canada in the north to Argentina in the south), as well as the South Pacific, the Middle East, and Africa including Madagascar. Current research projects include studies of culture and the environment, refugee and migration studies, the history of anthropology, artisanal mining, mobile phones, the history of public health, and First Nations identity and politics in Canada.

Applicants must complete the full International Baccalaureate Diploma including each of the following to be considered for admission: Completion of the entire Diploma including the Theory of Knowledge and Extended Essay; Passes in a minimum of 6 subjects of which 3 must be at the Higher Level; A minimum grade total of 28 including points awarded for the Extended Essay and Theory of Knowledge; No mark less than 4 on any individual course; Prerequisites for your program as specified by Western. Other English Language Requirements accepted: Minimum score required on the TOEFL is 550 on the paper based with a 5 on the TWE, and 83 on the internet-based tests with no score below 20; Pearson Test of English Academic: A minimum overall score of 58 is required with no score less than 56; Michigan English Language Assessment Battery (MELAB): A minimum overall score of 80 is required with no score less than 78; International English Language Testing Service (IELTS): a minimum overall band score of 6.5 with no part less than 6.0; CanTEST: A minimum overall score of 4.0 is required with no part less than 4.0; CAEL: A minimum overall score of 60 is required with no part less than 60.
