Critically engage in the art of cinema and explore the global and historical conditions that have made it one of the most influential forms of visual culture. Develop strong skills in critical thinking shaped by contemporary, interdisciplinary scholarship. All of our film programs offer the opportunity to study a wide range of contemporary and classic films. Narrative, documentary experimental film and video are examined within historical, theoretical and critical streams, with specific emphasis on the study of national cinemas. Attention to modes of film production, distribution, exhibition, and reception, places the study of cinema in larger social and political contexts.

Film Studies examines one of the most important, popular, and influential forms of media of the 20th and 21st Century. Students in Film Studies delve into the aesthetics, the history, the philosophy and the technology of film making through practical historical and theoretical courses. Film is considered from several viewpoints; including political, sociological, historical, and cultural ones – all enabling students to understand, analyze, discuss and explain film in its many forms

Module Requirements - 6.0 courses:

1.0 courses: Film Studies 2252F/G, Film Studies 2254F/G.

1.5 courses: Film Studies 2230F/G, Film Studies 3371F/G, Film Studies 3373F/G.

1.5 courses from: Film Studies 2235F/G, Film Studies 2240F/G, Film Studies 2242F/G, Film Studies 2243F/G, Film Studies 2244E, Film Studies 2245F/G-2247F/G, Film Studies 2258F/G, Film Studies 2297F/G, Film Studies 3330F/G, Film Studies 3364F/G, Film Studies 3375F/G, Film Studies 3377F/G or an approved course offered by another Department or Faculty.

2.0 additional courses in Film Studies at the 2100 level or above or approved courses offered by other Departments or Faculties. No more than 1.0 of these courses may be at the 2100 level.

Applicants must complete the full International Baccalaureate Diploma including each of the following to be considered for admission: Completion of the entire Diploma including the Theory of Knowledge and Extended Essay; Passes in a minimum of 6 subjects of which 3 must be at the Higher Level; A minimum grade total of 28 including points awarded for the Extended Essay and Theory of Knowledge; No mark less than 4 on any individual course; Prerequisites for your program as specified by Western. Other English Language Requirements accepted: Minimum score required on the TOEFL is 550 on the paper based with a 5 on the TWE, and 83 on the internet-based tests with no score below 20; Pearson Test of English Academic: A minimum overall score of 58 is required with no score less than 56; Michigan English Language Assessment Battery (MELAB): A minimum overall score of 80 is required with no score less than 78; International English Language Testing Service (IELTS): a minimum overall band score of 6.5 with no part less than 6.0; CanTEST: A minimum overall score of 4.0 is required with no part less than 4.0; CAEL: A minimum overall score of 60 is required with no part less than 60.
