Our program is one of the broadest in Canada, encompassing literature and linguistics as well as language courses at all levels.

The French Studies program focuses on the study of language, linguistics and literature while exploring francophone culture around the world. We keep our classes small to give you plenty of opportunity to speak French and interact with professors and classmates. You will be taught oral and written production and comprehension, guided by teaching assistants from France.

The linguistics program exposes you to the many branches of linguistics (syntax, semantics, phonetics, sociolinguistics, etc.) through a variety of practical and theoretical approaches. You will have the opportunity to study linguistics as applied to translation and to second language teaching.

The literature program opens doors to the literatures and cultures of the francophone world with a particular focus on French and French Canadian literature. You will develop analytical skills through the analysis of texts using various theoretical and philosophical approaches.

French Studies at York's Keele Campus offers two French language certificates:

Certificate of French Proficiency (Beginner, Intermediate, Advanced).

Certificate of French for Business (Beginner, Intermediate, Advanced).

French Studies at Keele offers opportunities to go on an exchange programs with various universities in Europe (Bordeaux, Rh?ne Alpes, Geneva + more)

Graduating French Studies students have the opportunity to go teach in Bordeaux, France for a year.

Get involved! The Association des étudiants Francophiles et Francophones and the Student Affairs Committee are responsible for a full program of cultural activities, giving you an opportunity to participate in additional linguistic and cultural experiences. Take advantage of The Multimedia Language Centre (MLC) of York University, located in S117 Ross — a resource centre dedicated to supporting students who are enrolled in language, literature and linguistics programs.
