This course combines an introduction to comparative politics with a history of Europe’s political development, focusing on the period after 1989. Comparative politics is one of the core fields of political science. It is the study of political development using the method of comparing different national experiences. Europe since 1989 is an ideal environment for developing an understanding of comparative politics. The continent’s nation states have gone through democratic political transitions as well as transitions from socialist to market-based economies. European politics since 1989 has witnessed the rise and fall of political liberalism, a populist explosion, and regional economic integration. This course will study these developments by comparing national experiences. Students would gain an in-depth knowledge of differences between Western and Eastern Europe, the causes behind Europe’s populist explosion, and many other developments, as well as being given the basic skills and concepts of comparative politics. The students would also learn to work in groups and how to present their ideas in an organized and convincing way.
