北美標(biāo)準(zhǔn)化考試詞匯必備(三)

北美的標(biāo)準(zhǔn)化考試種類繁多，有我們大家熟悉的TOEFL、SAT、ACT、GRE、GMAT等，還有一些考試是我們不太熟悉的，例如LAST、MCAT、AP等。

不過對于任何一個考試來說，都要求我們的學(xué)生具備較大的詞匯量。一個受過良好教育的美國人的詞匯量大概是2萬左右，而現(xiàn)在我們的大學(xué)畢業(yè)生的詞匯量普遍在6000-8000，英語系畢業(yè)生的詞匯量可以達(dá)到1萬-1萬2。這就是很多同學(xué)在出國前都要瘋狂背單詞的原因。

為了更好地幫助大家進(jìn)行英語詞匯的學(xué)習(xí)，尤其是應(yīng)對北美的各種語言和學(xué)術(shù)類考試，并了解英語詞根詞綴的知識，留學(xué)監(jiān)理網(wǎng)的老師特意為大家制作了一個系列的詞匯提升類文章，希望大家可以有效地進(jìn)行詞匯學(xué)習(xí)。今天我們就來學(xué)習(xí)一下How to Talk about Practitioners。

心理醫(yī)生--psychologist

This practitioner is an expert in the dark mysteries of human behaviour, in short, what makes them tick. Such a profession is often employed by industries, schools and institutions to keep workers productive and happy, students well-adjusted, and inmates contented. They may also do private or group therapy. 

精神/心理分析學(xué)家--psychoanalyst

This pratitioner is a physician, psychiatrist, or psychologist who has been specially trained in the techniques to ecncourage you to delve into that part of your mind called “the unconscious”. By reviewing the experiences, traumas, feelngs and thoughts of your earlier years, you come to a better understanding of your present worries, fears, conflicts, repressions, insecurities and nervous tensions. Treatment is usually given in frequent sessions that may well go on for a year or more. 

牙齒矯正醫(yī)師--orthodontist

This pratitioner is a dentist who has taken postgraduate work in the straightening of teeth. 

驗光師--optometrist

This pratitioner measures your vision and prescribes the type of glasses that will give you a new and more accurate view of the world. 

配鏡師--optician

This pratitioner grinds lenses according to the specifications prescribed by your optometrist or ophthalmologist, and may also deal in other kinds of optical goods. 

正骨醫(yī)生--osteopath

This pratitioner has a technique based on the theory that illness may be caused by the undue pressure of displaced bones on nerves and blood vessels. Training is equal to that of physicians, and in most states these pratitioners may also use the same methods as, and have the full rights and privileges of, medical doctors. 

脊柱按摩師--chiropractor

The basic principle of this practitioner’s work is the maintenance of the structural and functional integrity of the nervous system. Treatment consists of manipulating most of the articulations of the body, especially those connected to the spinal column. 

足病醫(yī)生--podiatrist

This practitioner treats minor foot ailments--corns, calluses, bunions, fallen arches, etc., and may perform minor surgery. 

筆跡專家/字跡專家--graphologist

This pratitioner analyzes handwritng to determine character, personality, or aptitudes, and is often called upon verify the authenticiy of signatures, written documents, etc. 

老年學(xué)者--gerontologist

This social scientist deals with the financial, economic, sexual, social, retirement, and other non-medical problems of the elderly. 

詞根詳解--odontos：

詞根odontos意為“牙齒”，orthodontist里面的orthos意為“矯正，改正”，所以orthodontist意為“牙齒矯正醫(yī)生”。

我們之前學(xué)習(xí)過一個表示“兒童”的詞根--paidos，那么單詞pedodontist的意思就是為兒童看牙的牙醫(yī)。 而periodontist是牙周病醫(yī)生，其中前綴peri的意思是”around, surrounding”。另一個單詞，endodontist中有另一個來自希臘語的詞根endon，意為”inner, within”，那么endodontist的意思就是牙髓病醫(yī)生。如果把前綴ex和詞根odontos組合在一起，我們可以得到這個單詞--exodontist。從事這個職業(yè)的醫(yī)生叫做拔牙專家，他們每天的工作就是幫助病人拔牙。

詞根詳解--graph：

詞根graph意為”logos, science, study”，這個詞根的衍生詞非常多，常見的有photograph--拍照、照片；telegraph--電報；biography--傳記；還有我們之前學(xué)過的cardiograph--心電圖。還有一個是大家不太熟悉的單詞phonograph--留聲機。

今天，我們一起學(xué)習(xí)了很多用來表達(dá)不同醫(yī)科類從業(yè)者的“高大上”的專業(yè)術(shù)語，如果你可以把這些詞匯用在TOEFL、GRE、SAT的寫作中的話，是不是一下子就能幫你抓住考官的眼球呢？

另外，我們今天還學(xué)習(xí)了很多拉丁語和希臘語的詞根，學(xué)會這種重要的單詞學(xué)習(xí)方法之后，你就可以和其他母語為英語的學(xué)生具有“說文解字”的能力了！
